Responsible Gambling

Betting should cost you an amount you decided in advance and never notice missing. If it is costing more than that, or if you are betting to recover losses rather than because you found a price you liked, the problem is not strategy. Free confidential help is available 24/7 at 1-800-GAMBLER.

Most people who bet are fine. A meaningful minority are not, and the difference is rarely obvious from the inside — which is the actual danger.

This section is written to the same standard as everything else here, because treating it as a compliance footnote would be worse than not having it.

You do not need to be in crisis to call, and you do not need to have decided anything. Most people who contact a helpline are calling to think out loud.

The one rule that matters

Decide what betting costs you before you start, and treat that number as fixed.

A bankroll is not a target or a float. It is money you have already decided you can lose in full, kept separate from money you need. If a losing month would change how you live, or how you feel about yourself, the amount is wrong regardless of how good your edges are.

What to watch for

The clearest early signal is not the amount of money. It is a change in why you are betting.

Betting because you found a price you liked is a decision. Betting because you are down and want to be even is not — it is the same behaviour with the outcome already chosen. Chasing losses is the single most reliable predictor of serious harm, and it is also the easiest to rationalise while doing it.

The warning signs page goes through the rest honestly, including the ones that are easy to explain away.

Practical limits that work

Rules made while calm are the only ones that survive contact with a bad Sunday.

  • Deposit limits at the sportsbook itself, set low and left alone. These are far more effective than intentions because they are not renegotiable in the moment.
  • Time limits, which matter more than most people expect. Long sessions degrade judgement in the same direction as losses do.
  • A fixed stake size. Flat betting removes the mechanism by which a bad night becomes a catastrophic one.
  • Self-exclusion, available at every licensed US sportsbook and through state programmes. It is a real tool, not an admission of anything.

Common questions

How much should I bet?

An amount you would be genuinely untroubled to lose entirely. Not an amount you expect to lose, an amount whose total loss would change nothing about your life. If no such amount exists right now, that is a clear answer.

I think a friend has a problem. What do I do?

Talk to them about the behaviour rather than the money, and expect defensiveness. The National Council on Problem Gambling helpline advises family members as well as gamblers — you do not have to be the person betting to call.
