Total

Also called over/under, over under, O/U

A bet on whether combined scoring finishes above or below a set number.

The book posts a number — 47.5 points, 8.5 runs, 2.5 goals — and you bet whether the actual combined total goes over or under it. Neither team's identity matters, only the pace and efficiency of the game.

Totals are driven by different inputs than sides: tempo, weather, injuries to key offensive or defensive pieces, and in baseball the starting pitchers and the park. They also tend to be slightly softer than spreads at many books, because public money concentrates on sides.
